The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) unveiled its latest tool, www.informny.mobi, which will allow Long Island's many commuters with web-enabled cell phones, mobile devices and Internet access to view live snapshots from Long Island traffic cameras and obtain the latest traffic information. The new traffic information service is specifically designed to assist Long Island's huge commuter population via their web-enabled mobile devices.
The new traffic information service is provided by NYSDOT's state-of-the-art INFORM (INformation FOR Motorists) transportation management center located in Hauppauge. The INFORM system is among the nation's first, largest and most advanced transportation management and information systems.
The INFORM system covers Long Island's Northern and Southern corridors, consisting of the major east-west highways and their busiest north-south connecting routes, the Long Island Expressway, Northern State Parkway and Southern State Parkway. The system will operate 24 hours a day year-round.
The new service will help improve the efficiency of one of the busiest highway networks in the nation. NYSDOT's commitment to better management of traffic conditions and information will benefit all the residents of Long Island by improving traffic flow, reducing trip time, congestion, and fuel consumption, while improving regional economic productivity with more user-friendly transportation services.
