The SUNY College at Old Westbury Men's Basketball team held off Skyline Conference opponent, Mount Saint Mary College, 73-71 off a tap-dunk with one second remaining by Lester Prosper on Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center. Old Westbury climbs to 9-8 on the season and 8-2 in league play while Mount Saint Mary falls to 8-9 overall and 5-5 in Skyline Conference action.
The two teams battled back and forth in the opening half as Old Westbury led 14-13 with 12:20 on the clock. Mount Saint Mary then orchestrated an 18-4 run to take a 31-18 lead, giving the Blue Knights their largest lead of the game with 6:33 remaining in the half. Old Westbury answered back with a 19-10 run to close out the first-half, down 41-37. Old Westbury grabbed a 69-68 lead with 1:49 remaining when Lester Prosper dropped in a lay-up. Garthlette James then threw down a two-handed dunk on a fast-break, assisted by Tremain Gary. Mount Saint Mary answered back with a three-pointer by Alex Kuchar which tied the game at 71-71 with 27 seconds remaining. The game came down to a final possession with three seconds remaining, Garthlette James fired a three-pointer, which rimmed out and was grabbed by Lesper Prosper, who tap-dunked in the game-winning basket with one second remaining. The Blue Knights turned-over the ball off the inbounds as Old Westbury hung onto the 73-31 decision.
Lester Prosper registered his first-career triple-double, finishing with 18 points (9-of-16), 13 pull-downs (9 offensive) and 14 rejections, which put him four rejections shy of the NCAA Division III record set by John Bunch of Lincoln University (Pa.). Garthlette James poured in a game-high 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting to go along with five rebounds including four boards off the offensive glass and three steals. Ian Johnson contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists while Brandon Mays chipped in with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Eddied Hood added four assists and four rebounds at the same time as Divine Jackson totaled five points and five rebounds.
Mount Saint Mary was led by Alex Kuchar, who netted 20 points including 4-of-4 from downtown and four assists. Tim Morris followed with 16 points and seven rebounds while Chris Harrison tallied 12 points and nine rebounds. Matt Weinberger added 10 points and Jason Cardez chipped in with nine points and three steals.
The Panthers bench out-scored Mount Saint Mary's, 30-4 while out-rebounding the Blue Knights, 44-28, including 20-9 off the offensive glass. The two teams combined for 37 turnovers as Old Westbury coughed up 21 giveaways, despite forcing Mount Saint Mary into nine steals. Old Westbury shot 331-of-69 from the field (44.9 percent) while Mount Saint Mary hit 24-of-58 (41.4 percent).
