The Carle Place Garbage District was created in the 1930s by the Town of North Hempstead to permit the Carle Place community to take care of its own garbage pickup needs. The district has dutifully performed that service for over 70 years.
Despite decades of service to the Carle Place community, several years ago the Town of North Hempstead attempted to dissolve the Carle Place Garbage District. The homeowners in Carle Place overwhelmingly voted to keep the garbage district in existence and maintain local control over garbage collection.
Local control means that any collection problems or difficulty with our carting company can be solved by contacting anyone of your commissioners. We all live in Carle Place and are listed in the telephone book. Local control means you can call any one of us any day or night to address your needs and problems.
We are sharing this information with the community because we are aware that there are state and county officials looking to create a county and/or town garbage collection system. We do not believe that any entity would be able to do a better job for less money for garbage collection. Moreover, there is no municipal entity that would be available to you on a 24/7 basis.
Over the years, Carle Place residents have paid some of the lowest garbage taxes in Nassau County. This year, the contract for garbage collection is $479,380. This includes three days of garbage pickup and one day of recyclable pickup. The Carle Place Garbage District's overhead costs total less than $20,000 a year. This includes all of the fees paid to the commissioners, our accountant and our attorney. We have no employees and there are no fringe benefits paid to anyone and no municipal overhead costs are passed on to you.
We are your neighbors and like you, pay the same taxes. We have spent many years working to keep your garbage taxes as low as possible. It is our desire to continue to perform this service to you.
