"April is National Autism Awareness Month. Since 1972, April has played host to numerous events around the country aimed at raising awareness of this devastating condition.
"The rate of autism has been steadily increasing throughout the country by almost 15 percent each year. Over 100,000 more autistic students are in public schools than just 10 years ago.
"The federal government has a responsibility to devote as many resources as possible to finding a cure for autism. I have been working to include funding for autism research and treatment in the Department of Defense budget. As chairwoman of the Healthy Families and Communities Subcommittee, I will continue to work on behalf of those with autism and their families to make improvements in special education and early intervention services.
"Throughout the month, there will be several events across Long Island aimed at raising awareness and increasing funding for autism. Please take time out of your busy schedules and participate in an event. For more information on events in your area, please visit the Nassau-Suffolk Chapter of the Autism Society of America at www.nsasa.org."
