New York Institute of Technology's (NYIT) Department of Athletics has named a record 79 student athletes, including 43 who received a 3.5 grade point average (GPA) or higher, to its fall 2006 Athletics Director Honor Roll. They were honored for their academic achievements at a special ceremony on Feb. 15. The 79 student athletes eclipse the previous high of 74 honorees set in the fall of 2005.

NYIT student athletes scored honor roll distinctions earning a GPA of 3.2 or better during the fall 2006 semester. The 79 student athletes named to the college's Athletics Director Honor Roll represent all of NYIT's 10 intercollegiate athletics programs, which include baseball (16); men's soccer (12); women's soccer (9); softball (9); women's volleyball (8); men's lacrosse (7); men's cross country (7); women's basketball (6); women's cross country (4); and men's basketball (1).

"NYIT student athletes continue to demonstrate leadership through their academic success. Considering the commitments of these student athletes-including practice, game participation, and community service-this record-setting number is extremely gratifying," said Clyde Doughty Jr., NYIT's director of athletics and recreation. "I am equally proud of the coaches and staff members who dedicate themselves to ensure that each student athlete strives for success on all levels."

NYIT's Athletics Director Honor Roll is a byproduct of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success (CHAMPS)/Life Skills program. The program was launched in 1994 in an effort to offer support services to foster the development of student athletes. In addition, it promotes academic, athletic, personal and social responsibilities, as well as helps build positive self-esteem and encourages the development of leadership skills.
