Issued in Connection With Housing Violations

In the early morning of Friday, Nov. 13, the Village of Westbury Building Department, accompanied by the Nassau County Police Department, executed a search warrant with respect to alleged multiple code violations at a home on the west side of Post Avenue.

This effort was a part of the village’s increased code enforcement efforts aimed at combating illegal housing and other health and safety code violations. It was also the culmination of an extensive investigation of the property by the building department, initiated by reports of illegal housing and other activity at the site. As a result of the search warrant, summonses were written with respect to 16 violations that were found to exist. If convicted on all counts, the owner of the premises could be subject to maximum punishment of up to $28,600 in fines and eight months in jail.

According to Westbury Village’s Senior Building Inspector Bill Mello, who participated in the raid, a search warrant is a legal process that is authorized by the Village Justice Court, enabling Westbury personnel to enter into a house or other property to investigate alleged code violations.

Meeting November 24

After almost a year, St. Brigid’s has agreed to enter into a lease agreement with Glen Cove-based SCO Family Services (SCO) to convert the parish’s former convent into Westbrook Academy, a residential school for children with high-functioning autism or Asperger’s syndrome.

SCO first presented its proposal to the village in 2008 and after lengthy discussions and hearings the agency’s application was approved. But, late last year SCO decided not to proceed. According to Westbury Village Mayor Peter Cavallaro that has since changed with SCO and St. Brigid’s recently reaching an agreement.

8-Year-Olds Top Raiders

The Chiefs 8-year-olds won a tight one 19-18 this past Sunday at home over the East Rockaway Raiders. The Chiefs are now playoff bound as this victory brings their winning record to 8-1 for the season.

The Chiefs offense controlled the ball with great blocking by the offensive line centered by Michael LaGinestra and anchored by Kevin Parente, Michael Sinisi, Joe Martello, Andrew Cho, with tight ends Jason Eccher and Lance Costa. Key runs by running backs Thomas Albig, Jack Duff, Andrew Casoria and Michael O’Connell helped the Chiefs offense control the ball along with first time starting quarterback Matt Sluka.

The Chiefs defense made gang tackles all over the field. The defensive line of Parente, Aidan Hornberger, Jeremy Samuel, Matty O’Connell, Philip Arnold, Dylan Vincenti and Spenser Warantz kept the heat and pressure on East Rockaway’s offense throughout the day. Linebackers and cornerbacks attacked the ball and finished off the Raiders; they were led by Albig, Andrew Casoria, Anthony Giunta, Patrick McTiernan and Ryan Calderone.

Arnold and Michael O’Connell made a big defensive stop on the last play of the game, a game tying extra point when they tackled the Raider running back in the backfield to hold onto the 19-18 victory.

Once again all the boys played and participated in the victory. Scoring is summarized as follows:

• Matt Sluka: 30-yard touchdown run (xpoint run by Michael O’Connell)

• Michael O’Connell: 52-yard touchdown run (xpoint failed)

• Jack Duff: 17-yard touchdown run (xpoint failed)

On the chilly evening of Nov. 7, the Westbury Wolverines arrived at another victory when they took on the Harlem Jets. The Jets, however, did not go down without a fight. There was a spark within their team’s heart that screamed “we have a chance to finally beat the undefeated Wolverines.”

Neither team scored in the first half and both defenses were worthy of honorable mention. The Harlem Jets’ spark soon turned into a flame. The excitement grew as the Jets pushed on defending their goal, trying with all of their might and determination to score against the Wolverines. Westbury, however, extinguished their flame in the second half when the offense became too fluid for the opposition.
