  • News: Spann Watson to Receive Congressional Gold Medal

    In 1941, a 25-year-old man from South Carolina joined nearly 1,000 African-American aviators for training at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and broke the color bar banning black pilots in the United States military. Next week, nearly 66 years later, he will be recognized with one of the country's highest honors - the Congressional Gold Medal. FULL STORY

  • News: Neptune Transmission Line to Be Operable This Summer

    Construction of the Neptune Regional Transmission System (RTS), LLC 660-megawatt, 65-mile electric underwater/underground direct-current line from New Jersey to New Cassel is virtually complete with installation of electrical and mechanical equipment at the new Duffy Avenue converter station currently being finalized. The multimillion dollar system, which will supply power to thousands of homes throughout Nassau and western Suffolk, will be up and running in time for summer. FULL STORY

  • Sports: NYIT Names Record 79 Students to Athletics Director Honor Roll

    New York Institute of Technology's (NYIT) Department of Athletics has named a record 79 student athletes, including 43 who received a 3.5 grade point average (GPA) or higher, to its fall 2006 Athletics Director Honor Roll. They were honored for their academic achievements at a special ceremony on Feb. 15. The 79 student athletes eclipse the previous high of 74 honorees set in the fall of 2005. FULL STORY

  • Sports: Final WABA Registration

    Final registrations for the Westbury Amateur Baseball Association's 2007 Little League season are currently underway. Boys and girls ages 5-16 are welcome to join. Registration will take place from 9 a,m. to noon at the Post Avenue recreation center building on Saturday, March 24 or at the Park Avenue School on Thursday, March 22 between 6 and 8 p.m. New players should bring a copy of their birth certificate. Fees are $50 for ages 5-8, $85 for ages 9-12; and $105 for 13-16 year olds. All players receive a uniform and end of the year trophy. Call 333-5358 for more information. Sponsors are also welcome.
