Homicide Squad detectives are investigating a homicide that occurred on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 1:47 p.m. in New Cassel.

According to detectives, parishioners of the Holy Trinity Baptist Church became concerned when 88-year-old Evelyn Everette of New Cassel, who lived alone in a private home on Urban Avenue, did not show up for church services on Sept. 3. As a result, several church members responded to her house with a key kept at the church to unlock her door in the event of an emergency.

Upon entering the home, three members of the congregation found Ms. Everette lying on her bed with a pillow over her face. They observed her pocketbook and wallet lying open on the floor.

An investigation showed no forced entry into the home, with all windows and doors secure. The victim was transported to the Nassau County Medical Examiner's Office and police are still investigating.
