The Westbury Union Free School District recently celebrated two major renovations to the high school. Two ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held to officially open the refurbished six-lane outdoor track and the competition indoor swimming pool complex.
Both improvement projects were made possible by the QZAB bond, approved by voters in 2003, enabling the district to move ahead with a number of much needed capital improvement projects throughout the district. For the taxpayer, improved schools, both physically and academically mean greater home values, and for the students it means they will be given the chance to learn, grow, and compete in a high quality environment.
The track will play a crucial part in supporting the districtís†Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds program as well as the high schoolís successful track teams. Projected programs for the pool include high school physical education classes, a swim team, lifeguard training, youth learn-to-swim programs as well as adult education and open swim for the community pending staffing and resource approval.†Once the district finalizes a schedule for curriculum, practices and competitions, times will be designated for the community to utilize the track and the pool.†
Both ceremonies were emceed by Westbury High School Class of 1986 Alumnus Dave Mock of WCBS News Radio and included district administration and staff, members of the board of education, community residents, students, parents, local elected officials and members of the Spector group who oversaw both projects.††
