A difference of 10 votes means that the Westbury School District will not have to operate on a contingency budget for the 2006-2007 school year. During a budget revote, held June 20, residents vote 803 to 793 in favor of the $85.3 million spending plan after defeated it a month earlier by a mere 16 votes.
This was the third time in four years that Westbury School District residents defeated the proposed spending plan and the second time it was passed, by an extremely close margin, during a revote. Passage of the budget means that equipment, capital projects, new staff positions and field trips, as well as other items, will not have to be scaled back or eliminated during the 2006-2007 school year.
"The board of education, administration, staff and especially the students, of the Westbury School District are grateful for the community's support of the budget. The message that support sends to our students is that the people of Westbury truly care about their future and I sincerely believe that our youngsters will in turn, continue making the kinds of academic strides they have demonstrated while unlocking their limitless potential," stated Superintendent of Schools Dr. Constance Clark.
