The Westbury School District's 2006-2007 budget revote will take place Tuesday, June 20. Polling will be opened on June 20 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Dryden Street, Drexel Avenue, Park Avenue and Westbury Middle Schools.
The previous vote on the $85.3 million budget, which was held on May 16, fell 16 votes short of passage with 806 (51 percent) votes cast against and 790 (49 percent) votes cast for the 9.37 budget-to-budget increase.
Should the budget be defeated a second time, the district would have to run on an $83.65 million contingency budget for the 2006-2007 school year. The contingency budget is a $5.66 million or 7.25 percent increase over the current year's spending plan and $1.65 less than the proposed budget being put up for a revote.
Operation under the contingency budget, however, would result in the elimination of equipment, capital projects, new staff positions, field trips and more for the 2006-2007 school year. In addition, class size would be increased and teacher's aides and assistants and well as school monitors risk the chance of being laid off.
