During their May 7 home game, the Mineola PAL Chiefs third grade boys tied the Manhasset Indians 6-6 and, on May 11, they beat the Levittown Blue Devils 5-2 on the road, increasing their record to 3-1-1.
The May 7 game against Manhasset was a battle from start to finish. The scoring went back and fourth throughout the entire game. Goalie John Clancy stood strong behind the defensive play of Gavin Dowd, Jake Connors and Brandon Durham. The Chiefs found themselves trailing 6-5 with 30 seconds left in the frame when midfielder Thomas O'Connell picked up a ground ball and ran towards the goal, passing to a wide-open attackman Steven Gessner in front of the goal. Gessner shot the ball past the goalie, ending the game in a 6-6 tie.
Mineola's scoring against Manhasset was as follows:
• Michael Elefonte - goal (unassisted)
• Brian Smith - goal (unassisted)
• Thomas O'Connell - goal (assisted by Michael Patalano)
• Dominick Paggi - goal (assisted by Ryan Eccher)
• James Gerstner - goal (unassisted)
• Steven Gessner - goal (assisted by Thomas O'Connell)
At the May 11 away game, the Chiefs defeated the Blue Devils 5-2 in a very physical game. The boys worked hard for every ground ball and on their passing game. Goalie James Gerstner got the start in goal and was fun to watch as he made saves with cat-like prowess and precision. The defensemen, led by Jake Connors, Chris Asam and Gavin Dowd, where suffocating.
Mineola's scoring against Levittown was as follows:
• Chris Lockwood - goal (unassisted)
• Thomas O'Connell - goal (unassisted)
• Brian Smith - goal (unassisted)
• Dominick Paggi - goal (assisted by Michael Elefonte)
• Thomas O'Connell - goal (unassisted)
The boys had fun last week as the entire team played in both games. Other players who contributed to the winning week were Thomas Bonziglia, Robert Luca, Zach Chorost, Jacob Correia and Matthew Demelas.
