  • News: MTI Moves Forth With Federal Suit Against Westbury

    The fate of two homes in the Breezy Hill section of Westbury Village is now in the hands of the court. On June 22, MTI Residential Services, the nonprofit housing agency that purchased the Bedford Avenue homes, moved forward with a federal lawsuit, alleging the village, its mayor, Ernest Strada and Village Administrator Thomas Savino illegally obstructed MTI's use of the two properties. The suit was filed in US District Court in Brooklyn by the Touro Law Center. As of press time, the village had not yet been served. FULL STORY

  • News: Market-Rate Senior Housing Possible Proposal for Vacant BOCES Property

    On June 22, North Hempstead Town held a public meeting to discuss a possible proposal for market-rate senior housing at the site of the now vacant Nassau BOCES building, located in Carle Place between Westbury Avenue and Voice Road just west of Glen Cove Road. The building, which was vacated by BOCES in fall 2004 when their lease ended, is located on nearly nine acres of North Hempstead "Industrial B" property. Any development of the site other than that of a commercial or industrial nature would require a change in zoning by the North Hempstead Town Board. FULL STORY

  • Sports: Wheatley Girls Track and Field Team Receives New York State Recognition

    The Wheatley School's Varsity Girls Track and Field Team was recently recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) for academic excellence. The Scholar/Athlete Recognition Award Program, which was initiated by NYPHSAA 14 years ago, recognizes athletic teams from across New York State for the exemplary academic performance of its team members. Based upon a composite of the grade point averages among team members, team champions are selected for each varsity sport from those high schools across New York State entering the competition.
