Early in the wrestling season Westbury's Varsity Wrestling Team suffered a great loss when all-county wrestler Solly Ramone went down with a projected season-ending injury. At that point, few in the Westbury wrestling community thought the team would make much noise in the Dual Meet playoffs.
Westbury playing host began the playoffs on Feb. 2 by defeating West Hempstead decisively. This win pitted Westbury against Mineola later that afternoon. Westbury, in strong fashion, eliminated Mineola garnering them a place in the finals. Westbury also hosted the finals on Feb. 3 upset a highly ranked Baldwin team in the first match. This victory was punctuated with a pin by Westbury sophomore Kadeem Lewis over his Baldwin opponent. Westbury faced Valley Stream North in the Conference Championship and battled them to the end, with the outcome of the match not determined until the final weight class. This time, however, Westbury came up short and Valley Stream won the match.
Westbury finished the season with a 14-7 record and earned the place of Dual Meet Conference runner-up. The ingredients that contributed to the success of this season included: three outstanding coaches Pat McGovern, Chris Valentini and Savalis Charles, over 30 dedicated and determined student-athletes, and the ability to expand the program through hosting major wrestling events at Westbury High School.
