Remembering Fred Hicks
On Oct. 1, the Westbury community experienced a great loss with the death of Alfred "Fred" Hicks. A lifelong resident of Westbury, Mr. Hicks died of complications from a rare blood disorder. He was 64 years old.

Levinson Proposes a Better Way to Fund School Districts
During a press conference on Oct. 4, Harvey Levinson, chairman of the Nassau County Board of Assessors, announced a proposal to eliminate the school property tax altogether and replace it with a modest income tax. In addition, the assessor would also like to see a set commercial property school tax rate created throughout the county.

Louis Liotti Leads Musketeers
At a press conference on Sept. 22 at the Gateway Arena in Sioux City, IA, Westbury resident Louis Liotti was introduced as the captain of the Sioux City Musketeers. An alumni of Green Vale (1999) and Portledge (2003), Liotti deferred college to play hockey in the USHL, the premier Tier 1 Junior A Hockey League in the United States. After a successful inaugural season with the Musketeers, Louis was offered a full athletic scholarship by Northeastern University to play Division 1 hockey in 2005.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5-Mile Walk October 17
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a 5-mile walk taking place in each of the five boroughs, Long Island and Westchester on Sunday, Oct. 17. Last year, 76,000 walkers in the metropolitan area, which includes the five boroughs, Westchester and Long Island, raised $6,113,000 for breast cancer research, education, advocacy and services for patients and their families.
