Jazz musician Bob Nell will take to the stage in Westbury on Sunday, June 27 as part of the jazz series Úquot;New York City's Downtown Jazz/Improv Scene Comes to Long Island.Úquot; Nell will be appearing at Mirelle's restaurant from 6 to 8 p.m.
Nell is an accomplished jazz musician and his newest release is entitled Soft and Bronze. This record is a trio, with Nell on piano, Mike Bisio on bass and Brad Edwards on drums.
Úquot;I started piano when I was 5, mimicking my older sister's lessons,Úquot; said Nell.
In high school, Nell received the John Philip Sousa Award for musicianship and played in the Montana State University Jazz Band. He attended the University of Washington and graduated with a bachelor of arts in music and a bachelor of music in piano and composition.
In 1978, Nell began his recording career. He received the Dewar's Profiles Performance Arts Award in Jazz Piano in New York City in 1991. According to Nell, he Úquot;was commissioned by 'Meet the Composer' to write a work for the New York Composer's Orchestra-West.Úquot; He composed Penta-Frena, Sexa-Freena, a jazz composition for 14 instruments.
Úquot;For the longest time, I have been trying to start a series out on Long Island,Úquot; said Nell's manager Glenn Leslie. Úquot;My dream is to bring creative, different music to Long Island and Queens.Úquot; According to Leslie, the series featuring Nell will bring Úquot;true, free jazzÚquot; out to Long Island. Úquot;This is Bob's tour; he's playing all over the country,Úquot; he said.
