Richard Simmons, a native of Westbury, died on March 3, 2004. He was a celebrated track and field coach. Arrangements were made by the Carl C. Burnett Funeral Home, Hempstead. Services were held March 6 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Old Westbury.
David Stein, 92, of Old Westbury, died on March 4, 2004. Mr. Stein and his wife owned Carle Place Automotive until their retirement in 1977. Born in East New York, one of six children, he served as a major in the Army Air Corps during WWII. Following the war, he founded Carle Place Automotive, a wholesale and retail automotive parts business located on Westbury Ave. in Carle Place. After seven years the business moved to Post Ave. in Westbury.
Mr. Stein was a member of the Westbury Kiwanis and served as president of the Westbury Chamber of Commerce. He was a founder of the Old Westbury Hebrew Congregation. He was a talented man musically and artistically. He could pick up any instrument and play it in spite of never having taken a lesson. When he retired he became adept at designing and producing lucite gifts. In addition to these talents, many people appreciated his help and practical advice.
Mr. Stein is survived by his wife, Estelle Harris Stein, who was born and raised in Westbury; his children, Kenneth Stein of Old Westbury and Belinda (Burton Eichler) of Summit, NJ; grandchildren, Kirk Brodows of Pittsburgh and Scott and Cathy Brodows; and great-grandchildren, Ethan and Maya Brodows of Dallas, TX.
