The co-captains of this year's boys' varsity basketball team at Carle Place High School were seniors Matthew Sterlacci and Evan Shanahan. Both of these fine young men were honored at the Nassau County Public High School Boy's Basketball Dinner held at the Marriott in Uniondale on March 25.
Sterlacci and Shanahan both received All-Conference Honors and were instrumental in helping their team to the Nassau County "C" semifinals. Although the team lost to East Rockaway in overtime (52-48) at SUNY Old Westbury, the Frogs played a solid game. The Rocks went on to win both the Nassau County and Long Island "C" Championships.
Shanahan concluded his three-year varsity career by totaling 569 points. Sterlacci scored 542 points in his two-year varsity career. In addition to earning All-Conference honors, Shanahan was the top scholar athlete for Conference VIII B/C and Sterlacci was presented with a plaque for being chosen to the All-Tournament Team for the Section VIII "C" playoffs. Sterlacci led this year's team in scoring and steals. Shanahan led the team in assists and was second in scoring and rebounding. Both of these seniors were excellent co-captains who will be missed next season.
Other seniors who contributed to the overall success of the team include Matthew McLaughlin, Andrew Montano, J.P. Metress, Matthew Ahern and Jerry Cheung. The team was one of only eight varsity teams in Nassau County (out of 57 total) that earned the NYS Scholar Athlete Team Award. The Class of 2003 is an outstanding group of young men who were a pleasure to coach.
