Depsite a preseason coaches' poll that predicated they wouldn't make the playoffs, Southampton College of Long Island University's men's basketball team, the Runnin' Colonials, is currently 10-12 in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) and 10-15 overall.
The Runnin' Colonials men's basketball program has been known to be the league's surprise team and this year is no exception. Even though last year's top scorers, Jason Lewis and Curtis Small, have graduated, the Colonials have managed to find the hoop consistently.
One of the main scorers on this team had been Leon Pursoo, the sophomore point guard from Westbury. In the Colonial's game against Bridgeport University on Jan. 11, Pursoo had a career-high 30 points, making four out of five three point attempts. His stellar play helped the Colonials seize the nail-biting 77-73 victory. A week later, Pursoo was named "Player of the Week" in the Southampton Press. As of Jan. 19, Pursoo was at the top of the NYCAC charts in several categories and, as of Feb. 10, he was third in assists with a total of 50 and sixth in scoring with 266 points.
