The Wheatley School Physical Education Department is proud to announce that Jessica Nachman and John Mullins have been selected as Outstanding Physical Education students. Criteria for their selection included exceptional performance in physical education, scholarship, leadership qualities and service to the Wheatley School community. Jessica Nachman and John Mullins were honored for their selection at an awards banquet that was held at the Milleridge Inn on Dec. 9. The awards program is sponsored by the Nassau Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
Throughout his high school career, Mullins has demonstrated outstanding athletic and scholastic ability and earned a well-deserved reputation as a Renaissance man. He is looked upon as a leader in physical education and his fitness scores and skill development have been outstanding. He has been a three-sport athlete during his four high school years, competing in cross-country, wrestling and lacrosse. While maintaining a highly competitive and rigorous academic program. Mullins has a cumulative grade point average of 3.99 and he achieved a combined SAT score of 1560, which includes an 800 in verbal. Mullins is vice president of the senior class, an editor of the school newspaper and yearbook, and is an officer of the jazz band and debate club. He has received numerous academic honors including the Dartmouth College Book Award, bronze medals in the Long Island Math Fair, gold medal in the LILT Spanish Essay Contest and he has been named "Biology Student of the Year." In his spare time, Mullins is a volunteer fireman in the East Williston Fire Department and plays lead guitar in a local band called Propecia.
Nachman has maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout her high school career and has been a four-year member of the Wheatley soccer and softball teams. As a physical education student, her test scores, skill development and attitude have been exemplary. Nachman has had a high profile in a variety of school activities and held leadership positions in several school organizations. She is the feature editor of the school newspaper, treasurer of student government, treasurer of the Spanish club and vice president of the debate club. She also maintains an active role in the Inter-Cultural Unity Club, Peer AIDS Educators and Mathletes. In recognition of her outstanding academic record, Nachman has been inducted into the National Honor Society as well as the Latin and Spanish Honor Societies. She is a National Merit Scholar Semifinalist and has won numerous awards in Spanish, Latin, global studies and history contests.
