The Carle Place Athletic Booster Club has donated $1,960 to the school district for the purchase of one automated external defibrillator (AED) and its accessories, including a canvas carrying bag. The school district also received donations for an additional AED from the Carle Place Teachers' Association. The school district budgeted for three additional AEDs, bringing the total to five. Each of the elementary school buildings will have one AED available to them, with two in the middle/high school and one for use by the athletic department.
In an article written in Newsday on Nov. 18, a 61-year-old man's life was saved at a high school football playoff game held at Hofstra University by the quick actions of the Locust Valley athletic staff using their own AED. John Tierney is alive today because of the efforts of the Locust Valley school administration, boosters and Mr. and Mrs. John Acompora who have been the main thrust behind efforts requiring defibrillators to be available for athletic events in all schools throughout New York State.
The Acompora family lost their son Louis, 14, as a result of being struck on the chest while playing goalie in lacrosse in 2000. The Acomporas can be very proud of their efforts and the quick action of the Locust Valley staff.
