The Rev. Adrienne Brewington, pastor of the Westbury United Methodist Church, was recently elected to serve as a trustee on the board of Long Island Children's Museum (LICM) in Garden City.
Rev. Brewington, who has been deeply involved in the Westbury community, is a graduate of New Brunswick Theological Seminary and also holds a law degree from Rutgers University School of Law in Newark. She practiced law for 13 years before returning to school, graduating in June 2000 and starting a month later at Westbury United Methodist Church as the congregation's first African-American pastor. She is married to civil rights attorney Fred Brewington.
"What appeals to me about the Long Island Children's Museum is that it reaches out into the community to children who might not otherwise have certain perks in their education," said Rev. Brewington, "and it provides them a supplement to their learning and more nuance in their development to adulthood."
Also appointed to the board of trustees at LICM were Lewis Warren, Jr. of Laurel Hollow, managing director of Salomon, Smith Barney's Corporate and Investment Bank; Dr. Martin Gary Brooks, superintendent of Plainview-Old Bethpage Schools; and Paul A. Schulman, president of Carr Business Systems in Farmingdale.
LICM Board President Robert S. Lemle, vice-chairman of Cablevision, said, "With the successful opening of the children's museum's new facility, these trustees will help us serve the families, schools and diverse communities of Long Island in meaningful, engaging and innovative ways.
The Long Island Children's Museum recently expanded into a new 40,000-square-foot building with 12 innovative galleries. The museum offers professional performances in a state-of-the-art theater on weekends, workshops and creative projects in three learning studios on weekdays and a variety of community-based programs.
