Carol Ann Freund, of Westbury, died on July 18, 2002. Daughter of Florence and the late Robert. Sister of James (Patricia) and Richard (Phyllis). Aunt of Jamie, Keith, Melissa, Denis and Richie. The family was cared for by the Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home, Levittown Chapel. Religious service at the Parkway Community Church. Cremation private. Contributions can be made, in Carol Freund's memory, to the Wild Life Fund.
Rev. Artie Mae Simon, Pastor of Jeremiah Baptist Church, Westbury, died on July 19, 2002. Rev. Artie Mae Simon, affectionately known as Mother Simon, was born on June 15, 1918 in Walterboro, SC, to the late Hanibel and Esther Fayson Lavant, and was the wife of the late Rev. Herbert Simon Sr. She graduated from Walterboro High School, Class of 1935 and the Nursing School of Hempstead, Class of 1968. She was ordained in February of 1972, and obedient to her calling, has preached the Word of God throughout the tri-state area.
Rev. Simon and her late husband were instrumental in giving many new young ministers the opportunity to preach at their church - Jeremiah Baptist Church of Westbury, where she was a minister for 20 years. Rev. Simon was also a communicant of the First Baptist Church of Westbury and Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Westbury. Prior to retiring in 1997, she was employed as a private duty pediatric nurse for several affluent families in Westbury and Old Westbury.
She enjoyed reading, especially to the young, and rendering religious counseling to all. She was the recipient of many community awards including the Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Award, the NC Executive Award for Dedication and Astounding Work in the Community. She was also a member of the Baptist Ministers Conference of NY.
She leaves to cherish her memories four children, Ann Corbin of Westbury, Rev. Charles (Rosa) Simon of Queens, Gloria (William) Jenkins of Brigantine, NJ, and Herbert (Rose) Simon Jr.; three sisters, Janie Raysor and Carrie Greene of Brooklyn and Betty Nelson; one brother, Isreal (Lila) Levant of the Bronx; brother-in-law, Benjamin Simon of Pooler, GA; sister-in-law, Christine Shavers; foster daughter, Valerie Martin; and a host of nieces and nephews as well as many foster children and other caring relatives and friends.
A funeral service was held on July 27 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Rev. Jesse Lyons, Pastor. Interment Pinelawn Memorial Park and Garden Mausoleums, Farmingdale.
Pardo Menghini, formerly of Westbury, died on July 20, 2002. Husband of Ivy. Father of Peter and Stephen. Grandfather of six. Arrangements were made by the McManus-Lorey Funeral Home, Medford. Funeral Mass at St. Sylvester's RC Church. Interment Calverton National Cemetery.
