On Friday, June 21 a wonderful gathering of mothers crossed political and religious barriers to meet together at the Islamic Center of Long Island. I am grateful for the coverage you gave to this significant event, given the way that Muslims have been vilified in most of the mainstream media. However, I am deeply disturbed that your article "A Lesson in Islam" (The Westbury Times - June 27) misrepresented our group of mothers.
The article incorrectly stated that we were from the Mother's Center of Southwest Nassau (MCSN). The mothers who attended came as individuals and not as representatives of MCSN. In fact, I explicitly told the reporter that while some of us were members of a mothers' center, we were not representing it. Some of the mothers who joined our visit were not members of any mothers' center. I would urge you to double-check and confirm your sources before printing information in the paper.
The gathering at the mosque was enlightening. Regardless of cultural and religious differences, I heard this group of mothers share a common concern for rearing children in ways that foster mutual respect and understanding in multicultural Long Island. As neighbors meet neighbors I hope that we may bring some measure of peace to our corner of a war torn world.
