For the first time in school history, both the Boys and Girls Track teams at Westbury High School won the Class B County Championships. For the boys team, this marks the fourth county title in a row (indoor/outdoor). For the girls, it is the first time since the 1984-85 school year that they are county champs.
The Lady Green Dragons track team finished with a record of 6-1 in division play and 10-2-1 in their conference. The boys were undefeated in division and conference play, 13-0 and 14-0 respectively. Among them, the teams sent five athletes to state competition: Jennifer Alexandre for the girls and Eric Church, Drew Harrison, James Clark, and Fredo Voltaire for the boys.
The girls season was highlighted by victories at Garden City and Wantagh. Tenique Sutton claimed first place in the triple jump event while Jennifer Alexandre finished in second place in the high hurdles and the long jump. Candace Mitto also achieved personal bests in the shot put and discus throws. For the boys squad, Drew Harrison was the county champ in the 400-meter run. Other key contributors this season for the boys were Sean Bradshaw, winner of the Dragon award as the ultimate team player, and Hector Luna.
According to boys track head coach Donald Ross, while the seniors were key contributors, the freshmen were the backbone of the team this season. The Dragon's main competition this season were Uniondale, Farmingdale and Freeport, squads that are primarily composed of juniors and seniors.
"We have some great kids on our squads," said Ross. "Coaches from other schools are even telling us that. The students are having fun here and by winning, they are building self-esteem."
The fact that both teams were successful is no coincidence, as the coaching staffs for both the boys and girls squads work together as a team. While Ross leads the boys squad, Shirley Bonner heads the girls squad.
"The coaching staff works together, not separately," said Bonner. "There is a positive attitude around this program and a lot of energy. From the girls' perspective, our motivation was that we wanted to share the success that the boys had been experiencing. Every student realized what they had to do in their respective events, and we were able to get the job done."
Assistant Coaches Robert Schuler and Gino Deguetano also worked with both squads as did managers Saade Mitchell, Naomi Wellington and Jenine Atkins. The girls dedicated the county championship to Schuler, who could not be present for the win because he was with his terminally ill father who has since passed away.
"It made me feel really good at a time when I needed to find something positive," said Schuler. "I am really proud to be a part of both of these teams."
