Several members of the New York Jets football organization have been meeting with Westbury High School students after school as part of a unique mentoring partnership between the team and the school district to help students make wise choices as they enter young adulthood.
Recent visitors to Westbury include New York Jets Head Coach Herman Edwards and Director of Player Personnel Kevin Winston. Regular visitors include New York Jets quarterback/special teams player Tory Woodbury and linebacker Kelvin Moses. The players have been working with students in the weight room three days a week on physical training, while also spending time in study hall sessions. They have been talking to the students about what they should expect from college life.
"The Jets have left quite a positive impression on our students," said Westbury Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics Stuart Friedman, who brought the program to Westbury High School. "Since they are located just a few miles away in Hempstead, we hope that this will be the start of a long-term relationship with the team and our schools that will benefit all of the students of Westbury."
According to Moses, who along with Woodbury, was raised and attended school in the south where high school and collegiate athletics are a major attraction, said, "There's such a different dynamic here on Long Island than in other places in the country. These students should make the most of their high school and college experiences. These are important times in their lives."
