A Westbury couple putting the final touches on their August wedding died tragically last week when two cars simultaneously slammed into their Jeep at the intersection of Eastwoods-Muttontown Road and Route 106 in Muttontown.
The impact of the Monday, June 10 accident killed the couple, 23-year-old Sophia Bretous and 31-year-old Jean Desir, and split Desir's 1993 Jeep in half. According to police, two cars traveling north on Route 106 plowed into the Jeep as it made a left turn onto Muttontown Road from southbound Route 106 at approximately 10:40 p.m. The cars, a 2002 Corvette driven by 17-year-old Kyle Soukup and a 2002 Mercedes driven by 19-year-old Blake Slade, both of Brookville, were headed north on Route 106.
During a press conference held at Nassau County Police Headquarters on Tuesday, June 11, Detective Lt. Dennis Farrell said, "The 1993 Jeep was broken in half and both parts of that car traveled some distance away from the scene ... There are indications of both excessive speed and perhaps some reckless operation of the vehicles."
Both Soukup and Slade suffered minor injuries. Soukup, who suffered internal injuries, was taken to Nassau University Medical Center. Slade, and his passenger, 17-year-old Brett Stitsky, were taken to North Shore University Hospital in Syosset where they were treated and released.
The teenagers were arrested on Friday, June 14 and charged with 2nd degree manslaughter. Soukup has been released on $50,000 bail and must return to court on July 8. Slade was released on $100,000 bail and was expected back on Tuesday, June 18.
Detectives request that anyone who either witnessed this accident or has any information to please contact the Nassau County Police Homicide Detectives at 573-7788.
Funeral services for both Sophia Bretous and Jean Desir were held on Friday, June 14 at the Donohue Cecere Funeral Home in Westbury. A funeral Mass for Bretous was held at St. Brigid's Church on Saturday, June 15. Both Betrous and Desir were laid to rest side by side at Pinelawn Memorial Cemetery.
