A library can be considered a garden for the mind.
Literature is similar to a plant in that it grows, changes and stimulates the senses. A good book, like a good rose, can become universal and classic while others, like some flowers, are just passing fancies to be enjoyed for the moment.
Like a nook in a garden, our pleasant meeting room and adjoining patio allow for visual stimulation with exciting art exhibits, movie and slide shows. In addition, some wonderful musical programs can occasionally be heard, indoors and out, adding still another dimension. Comfortable chairs in the reading areas and our courteous, knowledgeable staff add to the relaxing and agreeable atmosphere. Motion sensitive devices, saving electricity when no one is present, light the library's stacks. While our literary garden does not need to buy new rakes or hoes, the addition of multiple ports for Internet access supplement our supply of valuable learning tools.
Like gardens, libraries require constant maintenance. Moisture, temperature and light levels must be perpetually monitored and space, through weeding, must continually be found for new growth. A well-kept library demands time and financial attention, just as a garden does. Over the past few years, considerable time and money have been spent renovating and expanding the Westbury Library that houses our treasures. While the library type of conservatory differs from the botanical kind, the variety offered and the basic premise is the same.
Thank you for approving the budget this year and helping to enable us to keep our garden growing.
