Andrew Bauerschmidt, a senior a Carle Place High School, was recently named a Citibank/News12 Scholar Athlete (formerly EAB/News12). Bauerschmidt is the second News 12 honoree this year and the 16th garnered by the school district since the recognition started in 1990. His selection makes Carle Place one of the top-rated schools on Long Island with this honor, with only two other school districts in the running.
Bauerschmidt was chosen for the recognition based on his academic and athletic performances. Currently treasurer of the school's National Honor Society, he is also a member of the Mathematics and Tri-M Music Honor Societies and has received the following awards: National Science Merit, National Science Olympiad, New York State Outstanding Physical Education Student, Outstanding Academic Achievement - CISCO Networking, Grand Slam (musical productions) and Dance (musical production).
In athletics, Bauerschmidt has been a member of the cross country team, where he is currently a co-captain, and was a member of the Section VIII Nassau County 'C' Championship Team, which he also represented in the New York State Championships, the track and field team and bowling.
Bauerschmidt is also involved in high school musical and drama productions, Key Club, the school's Vocal Ensemble and Crossroads, the high school newspaper. He has been a counselor in the Carle Place/East Williston school districts' summer camp program and has been a Boy Scout for more than ten years.
"Mr. Bauerschmidt is a breath of fresh air, a modest but highly competent person," said athletic director Jim Colligan. "He works extremely hard at everything he does, both as a student and as an athlete. He exhibits strong leadership skills and is not afraid to make the more difficult decisions in life. He is very well respected by his teachers, coaches, administrators and peers. It is my belief that Andrew Bauerschmidt has the capacity to excel at whatever task or endeavor he undertakes."
