Under the leadership of Coach Bernie Hintz, the Wheatley Boys Soccer Team recently completed the second most successful season in t he history of the sport at Wheatley. During Coach Hintz's 30-year tenure as coach of the Wildcat Soccer program, his teams have won 10 Conference championships, 7 Nassau county titles and three Southeast Regional Championships. In 1983 Coach Hintz and the Wildcats won the New York State Class "C" Championship.

The Wildcats finished the regular season with an overall record of 10-2-4 and won the conference Championship to advance to the Nassau County playoffs. After an opening round victory over Roslyn, Wheatley defeated Westbury in the quarter final round and went on to defeat Great Neck North to advance to the Nassau County title game. In an exciting game at Bethpage State Park, Wheatley was forced to come from behind for the third consecutive playoff game to defeat Valley Stream South High School 2-1.

Wheatley's opponent in the Southeast Regional Championship game was Sayville, a team that had lost only one game during the season. The teams traded goals during each half and finished regulation play tied at two goals apiece. The teams played scoreless soccer for four periods of overtime play, and the outcome of the game was to be decided upon by penalty kicks. By outscoring Sayville 4-3 in penalty kicks, Wheatley was crowned Southeast Regional Champions and earned a place in the coveted "final four" of the New York State Playoffs.

The team traveled to Bath, in upstate New York, to meet Oneonta in the semifinal game of the class "B" Championships. Wheatley defeated Oneonta by a score of 2-1 and played the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 18. A second New York State Soccer Championship was not to be, and the remarkable season ended in a 5-1 loss to Chittenango.
