The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) recently informed Wheatley High School that its varsity field hockey team has been recognized for academic excellence. The Scholar-Athlete Recognition Program, which was initiated by NYSPHSAA 11 years ago, recognizes team academic excellence based on the cumulative grade point average of a representative number of team members. A statewide Scholar-Athlete Team Champion is selected in each sport.
The top 12 members of the Wheatley Field Hockey team had a cumulative average of 91.61 and were recognized for achieving one of the highest cumulative team averages from across New York State. Each of the team representatives will receive a recognition pin. Congratulations to first-year varsity Coach Terry Rogers, her assistant, Tom Joyce, and the following team members whose grades were entered in the competition:
Sarah Bancone, Christine Marsh, Anjoli Anand, Daniella Azizgolshani, Karishma Patel, Jennifer Bonkowski, Alexandra Gams, Ashley Allcot, Tara Khedouri, Aquila Valledor, Donna Dotan, Easel Valledor.
In addition to being recognized by the NYPHSAA for academic excellence, the Wheatley Field Hockey program received recognition at the annual Nassau County Field Hockey Coaches Banquet. The Nassau County Field Hockey Sportsmanship Trophy was awarded to Wheatley. This prestigious award was in recognition of the positive displays of sportsmanship exhibited by the Wheatley coaches, players, and spectators during the recently completed fall season. The promotion of good sportsmanship is a priority in the Wheatley Athletic Department and the department is proud of this significant accomplishment.
