To permanently honor residents and the victims of Sept. 11, the Floral Park Conservation Society (FPCS) plans to build The Garden of Reflection in 2002. To raise funds for the special garden, the FPCS has joined with the Floral Park Youth Council and the Floral Park Recreation Department to hold a Freedom Run/Walk on Monday, Dec. 31 at 11 a.m.
Participants will sign in at the Village Hall auditorium beginning at 9:30 a.m. on New Year's Eve. At 10:45 a.m. a Fun Run will take place for small children, who will run/walk down the block and back (in a controlled area for safety), all receiving a ribbon for their patriotic efforts.
The main event, the Freedom Run/Walk, will start at 11 a.m. and commence in front of Village Hall, down Floral Blvd. to Walnut Avenue and back again. Quick refreshments will be presented at the end in the auditorium. All runners will receive a two-color imprint T-shirt commemorating their participation in the event and awards will be presented in the auditorium. Patriotic garb is encouraged.
Applications are at the Floral Park Rec Center. Additional runners can be added on a separate piece of paper or on a photocopy of the application. You can mail them to FPCS, c/o Steve Corbett, 140 Verbena Avenue, Floral Park, 11001. The fees for the run are $11 per runner for the one-mile event - two or more runners from the same family will be $10 per runner. For the Fun Run, the fee is $7 per runner, generally six years old and under.
