Under the leadership of Coach Dan Walsh, the Wheatley Boys and Girls Cross Country teams recently finished a quite sucdessful season. In the Divisional Meet that was held at Bethpage State Park on Oct. 27, the boys team finished third and the girls team earned a most respectable 4th place finish. Sophomore Sean Johnson who finished 10th overall in the race led the boys team. Freshman Corey Squire completed the three mile course four seconds behind his teammate to finish 11th. Rounding out the scoring for Wheatley were 10th graders Kirk Balducci (15th) and Rahul Saraf (18th) and Junior John Mullins (28th). Wheatley placed a close third behind Champion Oyster Bay and second place Carle Place. The team-combined time of one hour and 33 minutes established a new school record. Travis Senat (11th grade) and freshman Chris Battaglia competed in the race, but only the first five members of a team are counted in the scoring.
The Wheatley girls team also recorded a fine performance. The team's score of 144 points place it in 4th place in the Conference standings. Sophomore Kerry Neinstedt led the Wildcats with a 14th place finish in the overall standings. She was followed by Chris McDonald (10th grade), Kristin Busso (12th grade), Terry Nardella (11th grade) and 9th grader Amanda Lee.
At the Nassau County Championship meet on Nov. 3, Wheatley runners excelled, again. Three runners (Corey Squire, Kirk Balducci, and Kerry Neinstedt) finished in the top ten in their class and earned the right to represent Wheatley and Nassau County in the New York State Cross Country Championship meet, which was held in Buffalo on Nov. 10. Since only several team members will be graduating next June, the future of Wheatley Cross Country appears to be very bright.
