The Town of North Hempstead is making final preparations to host the Second Annual North Hempstead Soccer Cup, Columbus Day Weekend Oct. 5, 6 and 7.
More than 300 youth soccer teams (ages 10-17) from all over Long Island, New York City, Westchester and Connecticut will participate in games throughout North Hempstead. Last year's inaugural tournament was a tremendous success with over 300 teams competing. The 2001 Tournament is expected to be even better as North Hempstead welcomes Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) as a prime sponsor for the event.
"We are very excited that LIPA has joined us in co-sponsoring this wonderful sporting event," said Town Supervisor May Newburger. "Last year all of the participants in the tournament had a great time and the public was treated to some great soccer action."
"A few years ago, when we began to look at holding this annual tournament, I don't think we could have anticipated the level of participation we have received," said Councilman Anthony D'Urso (New Hyde Park) an original organizer of the event. "I believe having LIPA as a sponsor will greatly enhance our tournament and give us the ability to provide better youth soccer in the town."
The public is invited to attend all of the games. Sites for the games will be the following: Herricks High School, Tully Park, Harbor Links, Hempstead Harbor, Mineola Complex, Mitchel Field and Soccer Park. Admission is free of charge. For more information, please call 327-3110.
