On Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Meadow Brook Club in Brookville, the business leaders of Long Island will take their battles from the boardroom to the golf course during the fourth annual Fleet Long Island Corporate Golf Championship. The event, sponsored by Fleet Bank and presented by Long Island Business News, benefits the LIA Foundation, Inc.
The tournament offers two competitions - the corporate and the CEO championship - in addition to a new women's competition. Long Island's large and small companies are invited to field two-person teams of its avid golfers to battle for the coveted Fortunoff Cup as part of the corporate championship.
The other competition pits CEOs teeing off against each other. This year Long Island's business leaders will try to dethrone defending champ William Marks of Vinrum Realty.
To keep both competitions fair and competitive, the corporate championship will be two-person best ball at net, full handicaps. In the event of a tie, there will be a sudden death playoff. The combined handicaps of the players cannot be lower than 10 or higher than 35. The CEO championship will be individual best ball at net, full handicaps. Handicap card or, if necessary, 10 verified recent scorecards are mandatory.
Included again for the 2001 competition will be prizes and recognition for low gross, a scoring table, yardage books, and pairing sheets/pin placement charts. Last year's other winners included the championship team of Tom McAteer of Vytra Health Plans and Don Cowdell of Timber Ridge Homes, who won the Fortunoff Cup. Thomas Nagy of Summit Personnel won low gross with a score of 78.
"This is a truly unique event that's about corporate pride, client satisfaction and, most of all, fun," said Matthew T. Crosson, LIA president and an avid golfer who will compete again this year.
