Ultra-distance runner John Cantwell of Westbury.

Westbury resident John Cantwell, a 43-year-old ultra-distance runner and personal trainer, took second place in a field of 50 runners in a 100-mile trek run over the Labor Day weekend. He ran three straight days, 33.3 miles per day, in three different parks in New York City.

John's finishing time in three days was three hours, 47 minutes, which earned him second place, and first New Yorker in the top five. This is the fourth time John has run this race, and all four times he has come in second. The event is staged every other year, and is sponsored by the New York Road Runners and Broadway Ultra Society. John's next run will be on Oct. 14, a 6-hour race at Sunken Meadow Park. John won that race last year, running 39 miles in 6 hours.

In addition to residing locally, Cantwell is a personal trainer at Vitality Fitness and Spa on Post Avenue, Westbury.
