The greater Westbury community was reeling this week after a 14-year-old girl was gunned down in a drive-by shooting at the corner of Broadway and Rushmore Street, New Cassel early Sunday morning.

Triathlon Brings Out Local Speedsters
Javier Cuevas of North Bergen, NJ outkicked Michael Trunkes of Glen Cove to win the 14th annual edition of the Vytra-TOBAY Triathlon, held in and around Oyster Bay on Sunday morning, Aug. 19. Cuevas crossed the finish line in 59 minutes, 58 seconds, nine seconds in front of Trunkes, with Justin Cisario of Oceanside third in 1:00:36, Gary Jensen of Sayville fourth in 1:01:01, and 2000 winner Andre Lapar of Glen Cove was fifth in 1:01:26. Top Masters finisher was 48-year-old Fred Neinast of Belle Harbor in 1:01:44.

Swim-A-Cross: A Family Affair
Families Swim Together in the 12th Annual Red Cross Event --
There were 140 people signed up for this, the 12th Swim-A-Cross. "About 40 people signed up at the last minute. This is one of the best, if not the best Swim-A-Cross," said Jim Green, Red Cross director of public relations. "Last year it earned about $21,000 and this year we think it will go to $24,000 or $25,000." The annual event is a fund raiser for the Nassau County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
