A Well Deserved Tribute
On Saturday, June 16, the Central Westbury Civic Association (CWCA) will pay tribute to a Westbury resident who was and still is a member of the famed 99th Fighter Squadron in World War II, better known as the Tuskegee Airmen. Lieutenant Colonel Spann Watson, USAF, Retired, was among the first to be given the privilege to defend this country during World War II.

Westbury Fourth Graders Continue Improvement on ELA Exam
For the second year in a row, Westbury School District fourth graders have made significant improvement on the New York State Education Department's (SED) English Language Arts (ELA) assessment, administered in February. SED reported that 73 percent of Westbury fourth graders achieved either the Level 3 or Level 4 distinctions on the 2001 exam, a momentous climb from just two years ago, when 42 percent of students achieved Level 3 or 4.

Brescia Selected for Lacrosse All-Star Team
Sixteen-year-old Nicolle Brescia, a student at Carle Place High School and four-year Varsity Lacrosse player, has been selected to play on the World Class Lacrosse USA All-Star Team. Nicolle will be representing her country in the Australian U-17 National Championships in Adelaide, South Australia, in July.

Hamlet Cup Men's Tennis Tournament Seeks Volunteers
The 2001 Hamlet Cup men's professional tennis tournament is seeking volunteers to fill numerous positions during the ATP Tour event. In its 21st season, the Hamlet Cup will feature many of the world's top tennis players, including two-time US Open Champion Patrick Rafter and top-10 player Thomas Enqvist and will be held at the Hamlet Golf and Country Club in Commack, Aug. 18-26.
