For those who followed Carle Place High School's boys varsity basketball team this year, it was obvious the senior, tri-captain Mike Kelly was an outstanding guard who possessed superb ball-handling skills and was a solid outside threat from the three point line. This became more obvious at Nassau County's Senior Exceptional Game when Mike shot 9 for 12 in the preliminary round from behind the three-point line. Mike qualified for the finals by posting the best score against the very best All-County players who participated in the contest. Mike also connected on 8 of 12 shots in the finals to win the "Three Point Championship." He was presented with an award at halftime of the game, which was held at SUNY Old Westbury.
Mike Kelly was selected as an All-County player by the coaches in Conference C-1. In addition, senior, tri-captain Colin McLaughlin was selected as an All-Conference player along with junior Jim McGintee. Coach Jim Colligan was very proud of this year's varsity team. Colin McLaughlin broke the school record by taking 16 offensive charges during the season. Seniors Mark Sterlacci and Bill Smalley also played key roles in the success of this year's team. The team was recognized as a New York State Scholar Athlete Team and also earned their 2nd consecutive Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament Championship.
