The St. Brigid's Church Boy's fifth grade basketball team has qualified for the Nassau-Suffolk CYO Final Four playoffs. The team finished with an impressive 13-3 record following three playoff victories and share of the regular season division title, which included the team winning its first 10 games.
Of the 64 teams in the league, 32 made the playoffs. St. Brigid's was the only team from Nassau County to make it all the way to the Final Four. The team faced St. Matthews in their final playoff game held at St. Joseph Academy. After trailing by one point at the half, St. Brigid's fell down by eight points at the end of the third quarter. However, the team did not quit. Showing the heart they displayed all season long, St. Brigids rallied to take a one-point lead with under a minute to play but with five seconds to go, St. Matthews (15-0) sank a shot to regain the lead. St. Brigids had one more chance to tie, but fell short.
"The final shot may have fallen short, but our boys certainly didn't. They have much to be proud of, both in the way we played and the way they conducted themselves, on and off the court," said Head Coach Mark Levy. "The teamwork displayed by all 12 players was impressive, and as a result, we made it all the way to the championship semifinals."
The St. Brigids Fifth Grade "B" Champs are: Damian Bertuzzi, Matt Carr, Matt Gaynor, George Jackson, Patrick Lada, Kyle Levy, Sam Menzin, Tyler Ryall, Anupam Sadananda, Matt Shannon, Corey Thompson and Travis Troiano.
