On Feb. 11, at the Indoor County Track Championships at Farmingdale University, the Westbury High School Dragons stepped off the bus ready to give all that they had. The team was anticipating an optimal performance by their leading runner Fillippe Francis. Favored to win the high hurdles and score the most points on his team, Fillippe felt ready to lead his team as far as he could. However, Coach Ross made it evident that everyone would have to work if they wanted to win this championship.
Valley Stream South was favored ahead of Westbury to win the championship as they were expected to score in every event. At the beginning of the meet, Valley Stream South outscored everyone with the distance events. Leading the other teams, it seemed as if Valley Stream South was going to live up to their expectations.
Westbury, however, didn't let any hurdle stand in their way. With strong determination the Dragons brought everything that they had to the track. Fillippe led the way winning the 55-meter hurdles, 300-meters and scoring second in the 600. However, winning the counties was a team effort with exceptional performances by Javon Sutton, Michael Williams, Mardon Lee, Lloyd Thompson, Gavin Jackson, Sean Bradshaw, Drew Harrison and Michael Folkes.
It was the relays that finally crowned Westbury county champions. The Dragons were strongly represented in the 4 x 400 meter and the 4 x 200 meter relays. Lloyd Thompson, Drew Harrison and Michael Williams ran both relays along with Javon Sutton in the 4 x 400 and Mardon Lee in the 4 x 200. The Westbury 4 x 400 meter relay placed first, while the 4 x 200 meter relay placed second.
Coach Ross noted that this is the first time Westbury has won the indoor counties since 1994. This accomplishment is one that the team is hoping to repeat in the spring track season. The final score was Westbury 63, Valley Stream South 54, and Manhasset 49. The Westbury Dragons are thankful for their win, which took a lot of hard work and participation from every member of the team.
