The Town of North Hempstead's Harbor Links Golf Course, in Port Washington, has been recognized for its commitment to the environment by the Golf Course Superintendent's Association of America (GCSAA) as a Chapter Winner for the Environmental Steward Award.
The award recognizes golf course superintendents for overall course management excellence in the areas of technology use, resource conservation, water quality management, integrated pest management, wildlife/habitat management and education/outreach.
"We congratulate Superintendent Craig J. Schleider and his staff on this outstanding achievement," said North Hempstead Town Supervisor May W. Newburger. "The focus of this project, from the beginning, has always been to create an environmentally-sensitive golf course, using all known golf course technology."
Harbor Links is one of only 41 courses recognized across the nation. It was selected as a winner for a public facility in the Metropolitan section. Harbor Links is the only course from Long Island to receive the award.
"We are pleased to receive this award and hope that this is another step toward helping Harbor Links secure the status of an Audubon Signature Golf Course," said Commissioner of Parks and Recreation Gerard R. Olsen.
