The non-profit, Nassau County Sports Commission (NCSC), has announced the election of five new board members. The NCSC, created in 1992, is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life through sports participation for everyone, while improving the economy of the region by attracting major sporting events, teams, leagues and sports facilities to the region.
Gary I. Wadler, MD, chairman of the NCSC stated, "The leadership qualities, professional backgrounds and diversity of Peter Fitzpatrick, Scott Mullen, Michael Picker, Dr. Peter Salins, and Dr. Alvin Silver will contribute enormously toward the continuation of achieving the commission's goals and executing its strategic plan." The new board members will each fill three year terms, expiring in 2003.
* Peter Fitzpatrick (Rockville Centre) - Peter is presently the director of human resources for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Previously, he spent 14 years in the Pacific working in both the for-profit and not-for-profit areas, in the financial services and health care industries. He was also the managing director of his own international consulting firm in human resources and has served as a board member of the Boy Scouts and the Maine Cancer Research and Education Foundation. He is presently a member of the Catholic Health Services Hospice board of trustees, made up of three area hospices, Mercy Hospice, St. Charles Hospice and Good Samaritan Hospice. In addition, since 1990, he has served as a presenter in the Discovery Weekend Seminar for Cancer and most recently, has established a committee of young adults who developed an Adopt an Apartment Project in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity at the Rockville Centre Housing Authority. Peter resides in Rockville Centre with his wife and has five children.
* Scott Mullen (Wantagh) - As the general manager of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Scott is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the 18,000 seat arena along with a 60,000 sq. ft. exhibition hall. The Coliseum is home to the NHL's New York Islanders, the AFL's, New York Dragon and the NLL, New York Saints. Prior to the Nassau Coliseum, Scott was the assistant facilities manager for the Bender Arena in Washington DC and then in 1991 joined SMG as the event services manager at the Nassau Coliseum. He was later promoted to event administrator for the Philadelphia Civic Center. Mullen had also served as the director of operations at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center and was promoted to assistant general manager. Since that time Mullen has held general manager positions at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum and most recently at the Hershey Park Sports & Entertainment Complex. An active member in the International Association of Assembly Managers since 1993, he has achieved the rank of certified facility executive with the organization in addition to being nominated district vice president in 1999. Scott received his undergraduate degree from Drake University and obtained his master's degree in Sports Administration and Facility Management from Temple University. He taught graduate level classes at Adelphi University and also served as an athletic facility design consultant for the city of Philadelphia. He currently resides in Wantagh with his wife and has three children.
* Michael Picker (Dix Hills) - Currently the alternate governor of the New York Islanders and alternate director of the New York Dragons of the Arena Football League, Michael is senior vice president, Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA). In Michael's dual role, he is the liaison to the ownership group of the New York Islanders and the New York Dragons and is responsible for working with all the departments of the sports franchises. In addition, Michael is a senior vice president at CA, where he is responsible for the operation and administrative side of their consulting group as well as their corporate recruiting organization. With a 17-year-long career with CA, Michael has been responsible for marketing services, manufacturing, purchasing, human resources and various other departments. A graduate of Temple University, he began his career in the audit division of Touche Ross & Co., where he spent three years. Michael now lives in Dix Hills with his wife and two sons.
* Peter Salins, Ph.D. (Port Washington) - Since 1997, Dr. Salins has been the provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, State University of New York. Previously, Dr. Salins served as a university department chairman and professor and as an urban planning scholar. From 1993 until 1997, Dr. Salins, who has authored numerous publications, served as chairman of the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning and as director of the graduate program in Urban Planning at Hunter College. Trained in architecture, planning and social science, Dr. Salins addresses urban economics, housing and immigration in his research. A Port Washington resident, Dr. Salins earned an undergraduate degree in architecture, and a MRP and a Ph.D. from Syracuse University. Dr. Salins has served as director of the Hunter College Urban Research Center, senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research and associate director of the CUNY Institute for Transportation Systems. He also serves as a director of the Citizens Housing and Planning Council of New York, trustee of the Lavanburg Foundation, and director of the New York City Council on Economic Education. Dr. Salins was an adjunct associate professor, Institute of Suburban Studies, an adjunct associate professor at New School University, and was an instructor at the School of Architecture at Syracuse University. He was a member of the advisory panel to the White House Domestic Policy Staff on Urban Policy in Washington in 1977. He is a member of numerous organizations including the American Planning Association, American Economic Association and American Society for Public Administration. A veteran of the US Army, he served at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.
* Alvin Silver, Ph.D. (Roslyn Heights) - Dr. Silver has been the executive vice president of the ADEMCO Division of Pittway Corporation since 1977. ADEMCO is the leader in nearly every facet of electronic security technology. In addition to his position with ADEMCO, Dr. Silver is a professor at the Frank G. Zarb School of Business at Hofstra University and he holds a professional engineering license in New York State. Dr. Silver holds a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Columbia University, a master's degree in industrial engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology and a doctor of engineering science degree in industrial engineering/operations research from Columbia University. Currently, Dr. Silver resides in Roslyn Heights.
