Westbury's favorite snowman may have melted last year, but the New Year's winter storm has brought him back to life.

In recent years, when it snows, residents have come to count on local barber Giuseppe Telese to create a frosty friend at his shop on Post Avenue, to add some fun to the winter scene. Last year, the haircutter/artisan created a snowman after a storm in February. This year, he whipped up the frosty town mascot following the large snowfall experienced during the New Year holiday weekend. He put the finishing touches on the creation last week.

The larger-than-life snowman, displayed on the back patio of the barber-shop, Joe's, at 153A Post Avenue, has a comical twist this year. The sculpture is adorned with sunglasses and a bandana, and is accompanied by a female friend. Telese, proudly displaying the snowman last week, noted that it never fails to bring a smile to those coming in from the icy, slushy streets of Westbury. For both customers and other inquisitive members of the community who stop in to catch a glimpse, the snowman also seems to help dispel those dreaded winter doldrums.

"When it snows, they expect that I make a snowman, especially the kids," said Telese, beaming with pride about this year's work of art. "It's a conversation piece."

Snow sculpture is not the only artistic talent that Telese has shared with the community. He also carves wood, paints, and makes life-size mannequins. Two mannequins currently on display in the barber shop create a humorous, optical illusion of men-at-work in the ceiling.
