Residents from throughout the Village of Westbury gathered for the community's annual tree-lighting ceremonies this past Saturday, Dec. 9. The celebration was held at the village's Recreation Center on Post Avenue, with an abundance of holiday activities both indoors and outdoors.

The program included greetings by several prominent community members, including Mayor Ernest Strada, Michael Jackson, supervisor of the village's Recreation Department, Thomas Savino, village clerk-treasurer, Geraldine Sweeney, executive director of the Westbury Business Improvement District (BID), and Ben Pardo, representing the Chamber of Commerce.

To begin the festivities, the Brass Quartet of the American Concert Band played seasonal music, as members of the Westbury Chamber of Commerce served donuts and hot chocolate by the fireplace inside the center. Braving the afternoon's freezing temperatures on the front lawn of the Recreation Center, holiday revelers were then entertained by the Bethel Concert Choir. The choir, hailing from Bethel United Pentecostal Church in Old Westbury, made an appearance for the second year in a row.

A highlight of the event was a raffle by the BID, under the direction of Executive Director Sweeney. Prizes included New York Ranger hockey tickets and dinner accommodations, New York Islander tickets and dinner accommodations, and autographed Ranger memorabilia.

Also during the tree-lighting ceremonies, awards were given out to participants of the community's Thanksgiving Drawing Contest. The lighting of the tree was led by Mayor Strada, followed by the arrival of Santa Claus. St. Nicholas, portrayed by resident Chris Ruffini, handed out candy canes to the children in attendance.

Before lighting the tree, Mayor Strada introduced the trustees in attendance - Alphonse Campbell, Peter Cavallaro, and Paul Echausse - and extended greetings from Trustee John Meegan, who was unable to attend. He also thanked residents for sharing in the festivities, and offered best wishes for the holiday season and the New Year.

"We look forward to this every year, because it gives us an opportunity to start the holiday season, and meet with our friends," the mayor said. He noted that the event also gives the children of Westbury an opportunity to have some fun, adding, "That's what the Recreation Center is all about."

Asked to comment on the significance of the tree-lighting to the community, Trustee Campbell said, "I look forward to this festive occasion, an opportunity to meet with members of the community, and wish them happy holiday greetings." He added, "We are pleased to be living in America - to me the greatest country in the world, where we have freedom of expression."

Trustee Cavallaro commented, "I think it's a wonderful time for people in the community to come out in preparation for the holiday season."

Trustee Echausse, who serves as deputy mayor, noted that the tree-lighting is a tradition that was started in the village more than 15 years ago. He described how it is an opportunity for neighbors who don't see each other all year to mingle and exchange holiday greetings. "At least once a year, it gives all the people a chance to come together," he said.

Residents in attendance also expressed enthusiasm for the event. "I think it really brings the community together," said Keith McNair, "and really makes Westbury feel like a community for all seasons." He added, "I would like to wish everyone in Westbury and Nassau County a joyous holiday season."

"I think it's nice for the community and the children," said Michelle Lannigan, who attended with her husband Stephen and their young daughter. Stephen added, "It's nice to see something you can bring your children to."

Another resident added, "It's a time of year that you should share with everyone."
