Recently, I witnessed a display of bipartisanship when Governor Pataki, surrounded by Democrats and Republicans, signed into law a measure to reduce gun violence in New York State. Seeing that it is indeed possible for our legislators to work together for the common good, filled me with hope for our future.

Unfortunately, my good feeling evaporated after I was handed a campaign flier for Greg Becker. Mr. Becker's opponent, Carolyn McCarthy, was in attendance and Mr. Becker's attempt to politicize this event, shows a serious lack of character. The content of the flier was laughable. Whether you agree or disagree with Mrs. McCarthy, one cannot deny her knowledge on the subject of gun violence. Any attempt to distort her voting record on this subject is foolhardy and carries with it a whiff of desperation. Mr. Becker would be well advised to elevate the debate and not resort to gatecrashing.

I'm glad we have a representative in Congress who fights for legislation that actually protects people instead of one who tries to ride the coattails of others on gun safety. This was neither the time nor place. Mr. Becker, you should know better. Shame on you!
