On Saturday, May 27, 2000, a most gracious 70-years-young lady showed about 60 of her friends how to, by the grace of God, celebrate and give thanks for the gift of life.
The affair was held at the fashionable Verdi's in Westbury, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The party was alcohol-free, except for champagne to toast the birthday lady. The affair had a slight religious overtone, but it was not exclusionary. One of her friends did a reading. Her goddaughter, in addition to being Mistress of Ceremonies, also sang. Most of the guests made remarks. Three ministers, past and present, from her church, Westbury Community Church participated. The seating arrangement was the best I have ever experienced; each guest was seated with people he or she knew and felt comfortable with. The food was plentiful, and very good. Because females outnumbered males, the music was geared to group dancing. Both the young and not-so-young had a great time.
The Scripture, "It is more blessed to give than to receive," was truly in evidence. Each guest received a small teddy bear in honor of her nickname, "Teddy."
Her son-in-law did the champagne toast, while the guests sang along with Stevie Wonder's recording of Happy Birthday. We all departed for home after a most enjoyable afternoon.
To Mrs. Joan (Teddy) Brown: Thank you for allowing me to celebrate with you on your God-given 70th birthday. Like everything you do, you gave it your all. May you live as long as you want, and never want as long as you live. I give thanks to God for your friendship.
