Westbury Village Trustee Alphonse J. Campbell was recently honored by the New York Institute of Technology School of Education and Professional Services. The Dean's Award for Service to Teacher Education was presented to him May 20 by Dr. Helen Greene, dean, on behalf of the faculty, students and administration, in recognition of his outstanding service and many contributions to the profession of education.
"Mr. Campbell is a man of notable accomplishment, a person with deep commitment to teacher education, and a professional widely recognized by his peers and colleagues," said Dr. Greene in her address.
Campbell served as a teacher and chairperson in the Port Washington Public Schools for more than 30 years. He was a classroom teacher and then became chairperson of the Science Department, a position he held for 14 years, and then assistant principal for 15 years. He is a charter member of Phi Delta Kappa, the national honor society in teacher education, for the Long Island chapter. He has served as the president of the Nassau County Science Supervisors Association; he has been a speaker at national science teachers and supervisors conventions. He helped organize the first science exploration group of Nassau County high school students in 1978, a group of 2000 top high school students that continues to flourish and grow, and serves to encourage science research projects, competitions and science programs.
In 1987, Campbell served on a team of 40 professional educators conducting a needs assessment in science education in China. He has conducted workshops for science teachers in West Africa and Mexico, and has traveled widely, often doing volunteer work.
"Al Campbell has a range and depth of experience and learning that serves as a model for prospective teachers, for science teachers, for school administrators, and for parents and children," said David Arneson, chairperson of the Elementary Education Department. "He has served his profession and given back generously to all who have ever asked for his guidance and support. He serves his family and friends as counselor, parent and friend. He has the strong support of his wife, Mary, and his family."
