More than 240 attendees were present at the Westbury Friends School Gala 2000 as the Legacy of Light Award was presented to Martin J. Delaney, Elizabeth Moger, and Carolyn McCarthy. The award was made to honor those who "through actions today, give hope for the world tomorrow."
The black-tie event was held May 13 at the restored Georgian mansion headquarters of the Association for the Help of Retarded Children (AHRC). A silent auction and Sponsors' Journal were part of the successful effort to raise funds for the school's new Library 2000 project.
Delaney is president and chief executive officer of the Winthrop South Nassau University Health System, and chairman of the Long Island Health Network. Immediately prior to his present positions, he served as president and CEO of Winthrop-University Hospital. "Through his long-standing commitment to excellence, he has had a profound impact on the quality of healthcare throughout Long Island," said Director of Westbury Friends Ida Edelman.
Congresswoman McCarthy, a lifelong resident of Mineola who serves on the House of Representatives Education Committee, was given the award for her strong encouragement of non-violence in schools and high qualifications for teachers in elementary education. As McCarthy was in Washington for the Million Mom March, Delaney accepted the award on her behalf.
Moger, a historian and a birthright Quaker, has served for many years as an active member and clerk of the board of Westbury Friends School.
