Westbury F.D. Names Firefighter of the Year
At 75 years of age, firefighter Lawrence Bertram is no longer required to respond to any calls, yet he currently has close to 100 percent response. And he does not just show up, according to Chief Lawrence Tamney of the Westbury Fire Department, but drives the ambulance, drags the hose, and helps out wherever help is needed. When the department is fighting a large fire, Bertram makes sure that all the firefighters have enough food and coffee to keep them going strong.

Call for Moratorium on Hub Development
Concerned over the rapid pace of development in the area known as the Nassau Hub, the Nassau Hub Citizens Advisory Committee, a coalition comprised of 47 local business and civic groups, recently proposed that the Town of Hempstead institute a temporary moratorium on large-scale development in the Hub until a community "visioning" process is completed.

Westbury Athlete Named PSAC Player of the Year
East Stroudsburg University's Kristin Restivo, the nation's leading scorer, was recently selected as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Lacrosse Player of the Year and ESU Coach Sandy Miller was named the PSAC Coach of the Year.
